I made this prop set as a thesis project. My goal was to compare both PBR and hand-painted workflows and analyze the results. Learned so much about texturing in general and especially about PBR and how it differs from the hand-painted workflow. I did the whole workflow from concept to models and finally to texturing. Really enjoyed the whole pipeline and I feel like my goals were met.
My main takeaway was that where hand-painting is more creative and dependent on the artistic eye, PBR is more efficient and true to nature which actually gives more freedom to artists to fully concentrate on the asset's story itself. What surprised me the most was how hard stylized PBR was in the end due to the ease of having basic materials in Substance Painter already. Maybe if I try to learn to create my own custom materials, filters, and generators in Designer I would get the wanted look. I also learned that with a simple gradient you can get far.
